The historic meeting of the Korean displaced families that was granted permission for
the first time in fifty years from August 15 to August 18 showed the world a tearful
three-day reunion between long-lost fathers and mothers with their children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brothers
with sisters, and husbands with wives. Among them were the South Korean mothers in
their nineties,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who were mostly ill or senile due to their age, but managed to meet their
sons whom they had not stopped worrying about for the last half century.
Min Byong-ok, 96,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was too weak to travel to the designated reunion place on the first
day of the family meetings. But her strong desire to see her son,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Park Sang-won, 67,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],
gave her enough force to get on an ambulance and head towards the Seoul Sheraton
Walker Hill Hotel, where the visiting North Korean families and delegates were staying.
Min could meet her son for only twenty minutes in the ambulance but she felt an
immense happiness on her way home saying, "Finally I met my son Sang-won. Now I
have no regrets even if I die." However, two days later, the reunion came to an end
and announced another farewell, which put Min into a greater sadness. After Park's
return to North Korea, Min cannot manage to get much sleep and her sorrow deepens
as the only way she can console herself from missing her son is by looking at his
recent photograph taken during his short visit.
Another mother met with her son on the last day of the family reunion at a hospital in
Seoul, just six hours before the North Korean visitors left for Pyongyang. Kim Ae-ran,
88,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], could hardly move and her son, Yang Han-sang, 69, had to hear the North and
South Korean Red Cross officials deliberate that Yang could not leave the hotel to visit
his mother's home since that was against the rule of the family exchange visits. The
mother and son could meet at the hospital for thirty minutes as the officials came to an
agreement that the meeting could take place if it were to take place at a third location,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],
besides the mother's home. A television footage of the reunion moved the nation, as a
small and weak old lady cried out "Don't go! Live with me!" to her son whom she met
after fifty long years. Yang's younger brother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Han-jong, 64,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said his mother seems to
have lost her sleep and strength after Yang left.
The family of Hong Kil-sun, 88,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], are also worried about Hong's health as they fear she
is suffering from nervousness after she met her daughter, Kim Ok-bae, 68,
a Pyongyang Music and Dance College professor in fifty years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Hong's son and
neuropsychiatrist Kim Yu-kwang said that although the family had told his mother in
advance not to get too excited and to prepare herself for the farewell, the sadness and
sense of loss seems to be overwhelming,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Kim advised other families that they should
keep telling their elderly mothers that they should remain healthy in order to meet their
sons and daughters again in the future.

Although the image of innocence and purity that she had revealed in the 1964 film "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" had disappeared, one could see the mischievous look in her as she played around with a rose during the press conference.
